Exelon’s 2023 Sustainability Report: Leading the Charge for a Cleaner Future
Exelon strives to power a cleaner and brighter future for our customers and the communities we serve.
Exelon’s 2023 Sustainability Report is an important resource in these efforts, highlighting our programs and performance in crucial areas, including economic, social, governance and environmental initiatives. The report outlines best practices that align with numerous standards and frameworks ranging from the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) to the Task Force in Climate Related Financial Disclosure (TCFD) – both benchmarks created to help understand sustainability efforts.
“Safe, reliable, resilient and secure energy systems and infrastructure are non-negotiable priorities,” said Calvin Butler, president and chief executive officer of Exelon. “A successful transition will be necessary to continue to achieve these priorities. Our future grid will be smart, efficient, nimble, bi-directional and more interactive.”
Sustainability and clean energy have been at the forefront of Exelon’s operations – not only to serve our communities but to mitigate practices that could contribute to climate change. We have prioritized research, development and the use of new innovative technologies that deliver long-term emissions reductions. Continued electrification of the economy, coupled with simultaneous decarbonization of electricity generation, as well as lower-carbon fuel usage, are key levers to enable the low-carbon energy transition that Exelon is working to support.
In order to reduce its operations-driven greenhouse gas emissions while supporting its customers and communities in their carbon reduction efforts, we created Exelon’s Path to Clean plan. Announced in 2021, Path to Clean consists of a three-pronged approach to manage climate-related risks. The short-term plan to reduce Exelon’s operations-driven GHG emissions is focused on reducing these emissions by 50% by 2030 (and achieving net zero operations-driven GHG emissions by 2050). This includes focusing on sources that Exelon directly controls, such as fleet vehicles, buildings, gas distribution systems and T&D system equipment that uses high global warming potential greenhouse gasses. Other aspects of Path to Clean include our work to empower customers to reduce their GHG emissions through electrification, energy efficiency and new technologies. Over the longer term, we are also working with our communities and jurisdictions on policies and investments to drive toward a cleaner energy future.
We continue to explore ways to utilize innovative technologies to enhance the customer experience, and implement programs with immediate benefits today, especially as we pursue an equitable energy future. One example is our utility energy efficiency programs that allow customers to reduce electricity usage, avoid GHG emissions and save money. In 2023, these programs have been effective, avoiding 9.8 million metric tons of CO2 emissions.
To reduce systemic barriers, we developed partnerships with employers, nonprofits and energy-related community groups within the field of STEM. Such opportunities include workforce development training and educational resources. One example is the Exelon Foundation’s STEM Academy, a testament to Exelon’s commitment to supporting communities and youth. In 2024, the Exelon Foundation launched the Boys to STEM Academy. Both programs bring together STEM academic exploration through interactive hands-on activities, field trips to Exelon worksites, career panels with employees and leadership training.
From supporting individuals, communities, and the overall well-being of our planet, Exelon is actively working to address challenges and offer sustainable solutions. As we’ve detailed in the latest Exelon Sustainability Report, we're committed to providing innovation, best-in-class performance and thought leadership to drive progress.
