At Exelon, living by our core values of diversity, equity and inclusion is a business imperative – and more importantly, the right thing to do.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Commitment

Exelon operates in a world rich in diversity—in race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, religious affiliation, experience and thought. Diversity, equity, and inclusion at Exelon strengthen our company and communities by:

  • Attracting, developing, and retaining talent of all backgrounds that reflect the realities of our marketplace and communities, and the relevant labor market.
  • Creating a culture of inclusion through consistent and sustained execution of the Exelon DEI strategy, including progress measurement and accountability for results.
  • Achieving a diverse range of suppliers, vendors, and service providers.
  • Ensuring that Exelon leadership has a significant reach and visible presence in a strategic core group of diverse community-based organizations.
  • Seeking to be recognized as a DEI leader by our employees, customers and communities.

Inclusive Culture

We are engaging with employees to drive an improved culture of accountability for DEI. All non-represented employees are assigned an annual DEI performance goal to help us achieve a more inclusive culture. We will continue to focus on these internal goals in the future, identifying and setting more specific goals while emphasizing both individual and organizational action in support of DEI.

Powering Communities

We seek to bring economic equity and empowerment to underserved communities by helping create jobs and opportunities where too few exist today. We support an extensive array of STEM learning programs to educate the next generation workforce and advance meaningful change. For example, our annual STEM Leadership Academy provides young women the opportunity to participate in mentor-guided, hands-on activities and experiments, preparing them for future careers in STEM where women and people of color are traditionally underrepresented.

With over 77 different workforce development programs across our six utilities, we are working to equip the unemployed and underemployed in our operating regions with valuable job skills. A highlight of our workforce development efforts — Infrastructure Academies at each of Exelon's utilities — create pathways into utility careers through training programs offered in partnership with other entities. Examples include the ComEd CONSTRUCT program, sponsored by a coalition of construction and related industry companies providing equal employment opportunities in Illinois, and Pepco's D.C. Infrastructure Academy that prepares participants for jobs with leading companies, helping to create a path to the middle class.

Transforming Partnerships

We continued to increase our total diverse supply spend and set new records. We continue to enhance partnerships with regional chambers of commerce to provide grants and small business loans to help strengthen minority-owned small businesses and foster economic empowerment and entrepreneurship. Additionally, Exelon has launched a new pilot program with three regional affiliates of the National Minority Supplier Development Council to grow minority-owned businesses in the utility industry, focusing on Exelon's key markets.

2023 Diversity Equity & Inclusion Annual Report

DEI is as important to us as the delivery of safe, reliable — and ever cleaner — energy to our customers

Our Racial Equity Task Force

We further enhanced our focus on DEI by establishing a company-wide Racial Equity Task Force with executive leadership. The task force reinforces individual and organizational accountability in Exelon's culture through annual performance goals, hiring practices and increased transparency. It also supports advocacy for more equitable government policies and is undertaking a review to ensure that our political and political action committee (PAC) contribution practices reflect our values. For customers, the task force is developing outreach programs for our underserved communities to drive awareness of, and access to, reliable and clean energy, energy efficiency and solar. The task force also establishes partnerships with energy assistance agencies that will facilitate customers' access to federal, state and local energy assistance funding. The task force is focused on five key areas:

Culture & Accountability

  • Exelon is focused on creating an inclusive workplace, having courageous conversations, and building a culture in which any individual or group feels welcomed, respected, supported and valued to participate fully.
  • Exelon management employees all have a level-specific DEI performance goal.  The goal to create a more diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace is achieved through various key results, including diverse slates hiring and promotions, diverse interview panels, participation in DEI discussions and/or Employee Resource Group activities.
  • Exelon is increasing the transparency of progress on DEI metrics, both internally and externally.

Customer Focus

  • Exelon is developing robust outreach programs to increase awareness of clean energy, energy efficiency, solar, reliability improvement and power quality among customers in underserved communities.
  • The company will partner with energy assistance agencies to identify and implement initiatives to remove barriers for underserved communities to access federal, state and local energy assistance funding resources.
  • Exelon will develop partnerships with regional Chamber of Commerce organizations to provide grants and small business loans to help strengthen minority-owned small businesses and foster economic empowerment and entrepreneurship.

Community Empowerment

  • We award college scholarships to young women in Exelon STEM Leadership Academy who pursue engineering, I.T., finance and other STEM majors and are in financial need.
  • We're creating new partnerships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities to award scholarships to students in financial need.
  • We've developed a new pilot program with three regional affiliates of the National Minority Supplier Development Council to grow minority-owned businesses in the utility industry with a focus on Exelon's markets.
  • We're developing a program to modernize STEM Lab learning spaces in schools in under-served neighborhoods in our key markets.

Policy Reform

  • All employees are urged to participate in our democracy through a communication campaign about voting and a website with resources to register, find out key dates, etc.
  • Reforms to the governance of our political action committees were made to ensure our political giving consistently aligns with Exelon's corporate values.
  • We created an enterprise-wide Racial Equity Policy Working Group to evaluate opportunities for Exelon to engage on equity policy issues.

Workforce Development

  • Exelon has a growing workforce development strategy focused on bringing economic equity and empowerment to under-resourced and underserved communities by helping create jobs and opportunities to access those jobs where too few exist today.
  • Our workforce development programs span from middle school to high school through college, as well as for work-ready adults, providing a sustained, lifelong focus on development.
  • Exelon has more than 77 different workforce development programs across our six utilities (Atlantic City Electric, BGE, ComEd, Delmarva Power, PECO and PHI).
